About Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is named after the modern yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014). It is known for its artful and intelligent sequencing, which promotes health in both body and mind, as well as for its precise attention to alignment in the āsanas (postures) to prevent and address injuries or imbalances. Props are used skillfully to support proper alignment and to facilitate rest and recuperation in restorative and therapeutic practice.

Through regular practice, students develop strength, stamina, and flexibility of the body, along with clarity, steadiness, and poise of mind. Each class is thoughtfully sequenced so that students can experience a sense of balance, calm, and inner clarity.

In class, you will learn physical postures (āsana), prāṇāyāma (the expansion and regulation of life force), methods for working skillfully with the mind, and elements of yoga philosophy. Classes begin with a short period of meditative sitting and a brief chant to cultivate focus and gratitude. Each session has a unique theme or area of focus and concludes with Corpse Pose (Śavāsana), allowing time for deep rest and integration.
