About Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is named after the modern yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014).  Iyengar yoga is known for its skillful sequencing that promotes health in body and mind, and alignment in the asanas (poses) to prevent and heal injuries or imbalances. Iyengar yoga uses props when needed to support proper alignment, and as a tool for rest and recuperation in restorative and therapeutic yoga.

By attending classes and practicing regularly, students build strength, stamina and flexibility of body, and clarity and poise of mind. Each class is skillfully sequenced so the student can experience peace and clarity within.

In classes you will learn physical postures (asana), pranayama (breath expansion), working with the mind, and about yoga philosophy.  All classes start with meditative sitting and a short chant to cultivate the mind and feeling of gratitude.  Each class has a unique theme or focus. We end class with corpse pose (savasana) for rest and recuperation.

Level Descriptions

Level 1

Beginner (Level 1) class is the perfect place to start if you are new to yoga, or new to Iyengar yoga. Beginner classes focus on learning the foundational standing and seated poses and gradually introduce forward extensions, twists, abdominal poses, gentle back extensions, inversions and relaxation techniques.

Level 1-3

All Levels

All Levels (Level 1-3) classes may be joined by students of any level. Students are introduced to all categories of asana and begin to learn pranayama (breath work).

Level 2-3

Intermediate (Level 2-3) is geared towards experienced yoga students with confidence in the foundational asana. Classes include all categories of asanas with intermediate level standing poses, forward extensions, back extensions, arm balances, abdominal poses, twists, inversions, restorative poses and pranayama. Students are expected to be developing greater sensitivity in body, mind and breath at this level,

Gentle and restorative classes are for students of all levels who want to experience the restorative, recuperative and healing potential of yoga. Poses are generally supported by props and held for longer duration without strain. Classes move at a slightly slower pace and support a mediative and calm mind.
